North Haven, Maine - Maine's island community on Penobscot Bay

North Haven, one of Maine's fourteen unbridged island communities, lies in Penobscot Bay approximately twelve miles from the midcoast City of Rockland. It is served by a Maine Department of Transportation ferry making three round trips a day from Rockland.

Its year-round population of 381 (2000 Census) swells in July and August with the return of families who own seasonal homes on the Island. On July 13, 2007, North Haven celebrated the 160th anniversary of its name day.

North Haven is an island town proud of its traditions, its independence, its treasured natural beauty and its unique community of twelfth generation natives, fourth (as well as first) generation seasonal residents, retired and pre-retired baby boomers, maverick spirits, new arrivals, young year-round families, old bachelors, reconstructed hippies, young farmers, not-so-young Grangers, artists, sailors, artisans, fishermen, boat-builders, babies (Hunter, Caden, Ezra, Zeke, Bailey, Whitney, Emmi Rose, Cyrus, Parker and Warren ), makers-of-many-things, brides (Lydia, Hannah, Becca, Monica, Liza, Cassie & Amanda) romantics and curmudgeons.

North Haven supports an accredited K-12 community school. A new $8.1MM school was sufficiently complete for students to begin classes on September 8, 2008. The new building, which has opened to enthusiastic reviews by the entire community, was financed by $6.2MM in private donations and $1.9MM in municipal bonds.

The Town maintains its own water and sewer systems. The former is a state of the art slow sand filtration plant and the latter is a primary treatment facility.

The Town operates the North Haven Medical Clinic as a department of the Town. By January, 2009, it will be staffed primarily by two family nurse practitioners in rotation with one another with occasional supplementary coverage provided by physicians and other nurse practitioners.

Volunteers staff emergency medical and fire services. Law enforcement is provided by a Knox County Deputy Sheriff.

North Haven is governed by a Board of Selectmen, who are elected at an annual Town Meeting. On a day to day basis the Town is managed by an appointed Town Administrator.
